5cm/sec

One of the most visually-breathtaking Shinkai films yet:

Though I thought “She and Her Cat” had the best dialogue and “Voices of A Distant Star” had the most heart-breaking story, “5cm/sec” almost had the best set animation design and fluidity in all aspects of the animation world. Yes, it could even be compared with Pixar’s “Finding Nemo.”

The only problem is that the character designs are still mediocre. Even though they have greatly improved since, for example, “Voices”, they’re (too) simple in design and lack depth, unlike the background. The character’s hair, especially, would only have its medium color, a side of darker color to indicate shadow, and light sketch-like lines to show the sun’s impact.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with his new string of 3 new stories “about their distances.”

By the way, did you know that cherry blossom petals fall at an average rate of 5cm/second?
